Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

  • Chimera offers a range of AI servers and workstations so you can match your hardware to your actual workloads, not a marketing tier.

    • Starter Server (Ryzen 9 + 192GB RAM + pro GPU) – Ideal for small teams, studios, and first AI or rendering deployments.

    • Professional Servers (Ryzen 9 + 192GB RAM + RTX 5090 or Radeon Pro) – For serious AI workloads, 3D, simulation, and high-end content creation.

    • Business & Enterprise Servers (Threadripper Pro + ECC + dual GPUs) – Designed for multi-tenant AI training, pipelines, and mission-critical services with long-horizon capacity.

If you tell us what you run today—and what you’d like to stop renting in the cloud—we’ll recommend a configuration that gives you room to grow without paying for hardware you won’t use.

  • Chimera systems are engineered for private, high-integrity compute, including:

    • AI inference and training on NVIDIA RTX and AMD Radeon Pro

    • 3D rendering, CAD, simulation, and virtual production

    • On-prem collaboration tools (file sync, chat, workflow apps)

    • Internal applications and development environments

    • Hybrid on-prem + co-lo architectures using Companion OS

If you’re building, creating, or deploying AI and want ownership instead of dependency, any tier can support you.

  • Threadripper Pro powers our Business and Enterprise servers because it delivers:

    • Higher core counts (24 to 96 cores)

    • Vast memory capacity (up to 1TB DDR5 ECC)

    • More PCIe lanes for GPUs and storage

    • ECC reliability for long-running services

If you're running multiple AI jobs, shared services, or mission-critical workloads, Threadripper Pro gives you stability and room to grow.

  • Yes—but only where it matters most.

    • Threadripper Pro servers ship with ECC DDR5 RDIMM for maximum integrity.

    • Ryzen 9 servers use high-capacity DDR5 tuned for performance and value.

When uptime and data accuracy are essential, ECC is the right choice.

  • Yes—Chimera systems are fully customizable within platform limits.

    • Add or expand NVMe and SATA SSD storage

    • Adjust memory capacity

    • Swap GPU configurations (AMD, NVIDIA, single, dual)

Our listed builds are reference configurations, not restrictions.

  • Yes. Every Chimera AI server is fully:

    • Assembled and cable-managed

    • BIOS-configured and firmware-updated

    • Load-tested for CPU, GPU, memory, and storage

    • Validated for thermals, stability, and noise

Companion OS builds are also tested for service readiness.

  • Owning hardware lets you move recurring cloud spend into a long-lived asset:

    • Replace rented GPUs with local AI training and inference

    • Replace SaaS seats with vetted open-source tools

    • Run stable workloads locally instead of paying cloud premiums

    • Predict long-term costs with no surprise billing

For most teams, a single Chimera system replaces thousands per month in cloud and SaaS fees.

  • Chimera servers are engineered for performance, efficiency, and comfort:

    • Noctua cooling ensures stable thermals with refined acoustics

    • 80+ Gold or Titanium PSUs sized for long-term reliability

    • Starter and Professional towers are office-friendly

    • Business and Enterprise servers are best suited to a dedicated room or rack under sustained load

Power draw will be specific to the components in each server.

Given the Professional Tier II Server as an example:

    Components:

    • CPU (Threadripper PRO 9965WX): high-end workstation CPU, ~300–350 W under full load.

    • GPUs (2 × Radeon Pro W7800): each roughly 250–260 W under heavy load → ~500–520 W total.

    • Motherboard + RAM (ASUS TRX50 + 384GB ECC): usually 80–120 W under serious use.

    • Storage (1× NVMe + 4× SATA SSD): call it 20–40 W total.

    • Fans + misc (Noctua case fans, USB, controllers): 20–40 W.

This system, therefore, draws a roughly 1,010-1,030 W at full load.

Unless you heavy a very large user-base using the system 24/7, you can assume the following:

    • Idle load = 20% of max load

    • Typical load = 75% of max load

What does that mean on a monthly electricity bill?

    We’ll assume:

    • 24 hours per day’

      • 6 hours max load

      • 12 hour typical load

      • 6 hours idle

    • 30 days per month

    • Electricity rate example: $0.17/kWh (U.S. average–ish)

    • Formula:

      • kW = W / 1000

      • kWh/day = kW × 24

      • cost/month ≈ kWh/day × 30 × rate

    Daily kWh (by load type)

    • Max load: 6 hours at 0.97 kW = 5.82 kWh/day

    • Typical load: 12 hours at 0.71 kW = 8.52 kWh/day

    • Idle: 6 hours at 0.20 kW = 1.20 kWh/day

    Total daily consumption = 15.54 kWh/day or about $2.64 a day.

If noise or power usage is a concern, we’ll guide you to the right tier.

  • No—most SMBs benefit more from local, private compute than they realize.

    • A Starter Server can replace multiple fragmented SaaS tools

    • A Professional or Business Server can serve an entire team for years

    • Companion OS simplifies hosting, AI pipelines, and collaboration tools

You don’t need to be large—you just need to be smart about ownership.

On Prem & Co-Location FAQs

  • Most data centers maximize density and throughput. Chimera optimizes for privacy, control, and continuity.

Your hardware is not pooled, monitored, profiled, or virtualized by a cloud provider. You own your servers outright, and we provide a private, technician-only environment built to protect physical access and eliminate unnecessary exposure.

Chimera plans to expand our co-location designed for the modern era of AI—a private vault for your compute.

  • Yes—your workload decides the placement.

    • Tower systems fit beautifully in offices, studios, or labs.

    • Rackmount systems are ready for deployment in any datacenter, and shipped in a durable gator case with wheels.

    • If you colocate with Chimera, we handle racking, connectivity, and physical stewardship while you retain full digital control.

    Your hardware. Your rules.

  • Absolutely.

    Many teams:

    1. Start on-prem to prototype or test workflows

    2. Move the same hardware into Chimera co-lo for long-term stability, cooling, and connectivity

Your machine, OS, and data remain unchanged. Only the physical home evolves.

  • Unfortunately, no. Our co-location facility only accepts servers purchased through Chimera.

  • Only vetted Chimera technicians trained in hardware handling and zero-trust procedures.

No other clients, no shared rack access, and no third-party contractors can touch your equipment. All access is logged and monitored.

Your server is treated with the same standards as any high-value physical asset.

  • No.
Chimera technicians can service hardware, but data is protected by:

    • Zero-trust default configurations

    • Volume-level encryption

    • Strict role separation (hardware access ≠ data access)

    • Companion OS privacy guarantees

  • Each unit will be placed in individually assigned rack space with isolated:

    • network segments

    • firewall policies

    • authenticated connections

    • physical boundaries

No shared containers, no virtual machines, and no cross-client trust.
You are not renting someone else’s server—you’re securing your own.

  • We provide Remote Hands support for diagnostics and replacement.
If a part fails, you may be covered by warranty, or you can purchase a replacement through Chimera

We notify you immediately, perform the swap, and confirm the system state once restored.

Most clients recover their hardware investment in months, not years.
You get predictable costs, long-term savings, and complete sovereignty.

  • Chimera offers:

    • monthly plans

    • annual options

    • no long-term lock-ins

    • straightforward cancellation

We believe your hardware should stay with us because it’s a sensible solution—not because of fine print.
